Europe uneven but progressing

Overall status

By the end of 2024, 5G covered 85% of Europe’s population, placing the region slightly below leading countries like the USA (98%) and South Korea (99%). Despite strong urban coverage, rural areas lag behind due to limited infrastructure investments. Many EU countries have adopted national 5G strategies to accelerate rollout, focusing on smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and industrial automation.

700 MHz spectrum

Northern and southern European nations, including Sweden, Denmark, and Greece, expanded 5G coverage using the 700 MHz band, improving both reach and transmission speed.

Spain extends Huawei contract

Telefónica renewed its agreement with Huawei until 2030 for 5G core equipment, raising concerns over EU recommendations limiting Chinese suppliers in critical infrastructure.

Poland expands network

Operators like Orange continue to build 5G coverage by increasing base stations and upgrading existing infrastructure.

Asia leads in investments and innovation

South Korea achieves full coverage

SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus invested $22 billion to achieve full 5G coverage. The country is a global benchmark for 5G innovation, enabling autonomous transport, smart factories, and next-generation gaming services. With network densification and advanced spectrum management, South Korea demonstrates how coordinated public and private investments can accelerate technological adoption.

India expands 5G reach

Reliance Jio launched a 5G SA network covering over 60% of the population and plans $25 billion in further investments in 2025. Bharti Airtel partnered with Ericsson to modernize 4G and 5G infrastructure using Open RAN and centralized radio acces. Numaligarh Refinery Limited in Assam deployed India’s first private 5G industrial network supporting IoT, AR/VR, and digital twins. India is positioning 5G as a catalyst for economic growth, particularly in manufacturing, agriculture, and education sectors.

Asia-Pacific growth

By mid-2025, eight countries including India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand reached over 50% 5G coverage, with operator investments exceeding $220 billion since 2019. The region is experiencing rapid adoption of smart city technologies, industrial automation, and digital health solutions. Governments are providing regulatory support and incentives to encourage infrastructure expansion and innovation.

Future outlook

By 2030, 5G subscriptions are expected to reach 440 million – 91% of all mobile subscriptions. urope will continue 5G development with a focus on standalone networks and mid-band deployment to improve transmission speeds. Asia will maintain global leadership through high investments, innovation, and strategic partnerships. Key trends include private industrial 5G networks, edge computing integration, and enhanced mobile broadband applications for consumers and enterprises.
