Kaspi’s domestic results supported the case for a highly engaged payments, marketplace and lending ecosystem. They did not establish that a low earnings multiple was an error by the market. Currency exposure, financial regulation and the cost of expansion into Türkiye were part of the economics a shareholder had to evaluate.
Start with the correct reporting perimeter
Q3 revenue of KZT797 billion, up 20%, and net income of KZT307 billion, up 12%, excluded Türkiye. Including Türkiye, revenue was approximately KZT1.1 trillion. Kaspi also reported 76 monthly transactions per active consumer. These are the relevant scopes in its Q3 announcement.
The distinction prevents a misleading combination: valuing the whole group while describing only the more profitable domestic business. Dividing 307 by 797 gives an approximately 38.5% net margin for the stated ex-Türkiye figures. It is not the consolidated group margin, and it is not an EBITDA margin.
The ecosystem creates advantages and shared exposures
Payments gives consumers and merchants reasons to use the platform frequently. Marketplace adds shopping and merchant services. Fintech links transactions with credit. Together, those activities can support customer acquisition and repeat use more efficiently than three unrelated businesses could.
They also connect the risks. A weaker consumer environment can reduce purchases, slow lending and increase credit losses at the same time. Deposits used to fund credit are liabilities owed to customers, not free capital. A closed ecosystem does not create a perpetual-motion financing machine.
The disclosed quarterly cost of risk was 0.6%, compared with 0.5% a year earlier. It was a favorable observation about that period, not proof that proprietary data eliminates credit risk. Comparisons with banks or international marketplaces need the same measurement period, leverage and revenue definitions.
Türkiye was a separate execution test
Hepsiburada’s Q3 purchases grew 16% and revenue grew 22%, while EBITDA fell 74% as the business invested. Kaspi owned 66.35% and was still seeking regulatory approval for the Rabobank A.Ş. acquisition. Those facts described both opportunity and cost.
A large addressable population does not automatically multiply the parent company’s realizable market. Replicating a successful model requires customers, merchants, regulatory permissions and attractive unit economics in the new country. The decisive question is whether spending produces durable engagement and eventual cash returns, rather than growth sustained by continued subsidy.
A sensible boundary case is that Kazakhstan remains successful while Türkiye takes longer and costs more than expected. The parent can then report respectable domestic growth and still deliver disappointing returns on the capital committed abroad.
Currency changes the shareholder’s unit of account
Consider an illustrative case in which earnings rise 20% in tenge while the dollar value of one tenge falls 25%. Dollar-translated earnings would be 1.20 × 0.75 = 0.90 of the initial amount, a 10% decline. This is an earnings-translation calculation, not a forecast of the ADS price. Valuation multiples, distributions and other factors also affect the investment return.
That is why comparing a tenge-based growth rate with a dollar price target is incomplete. An investor needs both the operating assumptions and an exchange-rate assumption. A discount to a company in another country may compensate for different exposures rather than signify an overlooked bargain.
Capital returns and geopolitical claims need their own evidence
The $100 million ADS repurchase was announced in November 2025. It should not be described as an immediate reaction to a September 2024 short-seller report. A repurchase expresses a capital-allocation decision; it does not prove a valuation or remove risk.
Kaspi’s response to investor questions sets out the company’s position on the allegations. It should be read as that position. An analyst’s favorable rating is neither a legal opinion nor evidence that an independent compliance team has cleared every exposure.
The useful case therefore rests on measurable domestic performance, disciplined overseas investment and the price paid for the combined risks. It cannot be reduced to “better ROE than peers” or to a claim that the market has misunderstood everything.
