The main choice comes near the end. Providence was released last but takes place before season 3. Watching it earlier gives you more background for the newer inspectors’ story. Keeping it last preserves the order in which the series originally revealed that background. Both routes work, provided you keep First Inspector after season 3.
The complete Psycho-Pass watch order
This route covers the three television seasons and all six theatrical stories. The three Sinners of the System cases count separately. First Inspector occupies one place even when a streaming service divides it into episodes.
- Psycho-Pass season 1 (2012–2013), all 22 episodes, or the 11 longer episodes of New Edit (2014).
- Psycho-Pass 2 (2014), all 11 episodes.
- Psycho-Pass The Movie (2015), the first feature film.
- Sinners of the System Case.1 — Crime and Punishment (2019).
- Sinners of the System Case.2 — First Guardian (2019).
- Sinners of the System Case.3 — On the Other Side of Love and Hate (2019).
- Psycho-Pass 3 (2019), all eight extended episodes.
- Psycho-Pass 3 First Inspector (2020), the film or its complete three-act presentation.
- Psycho-Pass Providence (2023).
For the alternative that explains the background earlier, move only Providence to the position after SS Case.3. The final stretch then becomes Providence → season 3 → First Inspector. You do not need to reorder every flashback or start with First Guardian.

Choose the original season or New Edit
If both editions are equally easy to obtain, I recommend the original 22 episodes for their shorter instalments and original stopping points. They introduce Akane Tsunemori as a new Inspector and establish how the Public Safety Bureau investigates people whose measured criminal tendencies exceed the system’s limits. You learn the institution alongside someone entering it. The production studio’s first-episode synopsis starts with precisely that assignment.
New Edit is another complete presentation of that first-season story. Fuji TV describes it as the original 22 episodes reassembled into 11 hour-long broadcast slots, with additional footage. Eleven entries therefore do not mean a recap that cuts the story in half. Broadcast slots also include breaks; do not expect each streaming episode to run for exactly 60 minutes.
Choose New Edit if that is the complete edition available to you or if you prefer longer instalments. Choose the original for its original episode structure. Neither choice requires watching the other before season 2. If you have already finished the original, New Edit is an optional revisit for the changed presentation and added material, rather than a missing season.
Be especially careful with the number 11. Season 2 also has 11 episodes, but it is a different story. Check the season’s full title and episode length instead of identifying it by the episode count alone.
The 2015 film continues the television story
After season 2, watch Psycho-Pass The Movie. Production I.G places it after the second television season. It is a new feature-length story, not a compilation of season 1, and it should not be replaced with Providence just because both titles contain “Psycho-Pass” and “movie.”
The first film takes the investigation outside Japan as the Sibyl System is exported overseas. Its original production announcement places the action in 2116 and introduces SEAUn, the Southeast Asia Union. That expansion matters for the next films, which follow characters beyond the familiar Tokyo team. Watching the feature here keeps those departures and later encounters in sequence.
Keep the three Sinners of the System cases together
Watch SS Case.1, Case.2 and Case.3 after the 2015 film. Their numbering is the release sequence: the official announcement gives 25 January, 15 February and 8 March 2019. A service may package them as episodes within one collection; those labels still refer to three separate films.
Each case supplies a different part of the wider cast’s background. Crime and Punishment follows Mika Shimotsuki and Nobuchika Ginoza on an escort assignment involving a counsellor and an isolation facility. First Guardian centres on Teppei Sugo’s military past and an investigation with Tomomi Masaoka. Case.3 follows Shinya Kogami abroad after the SEAUn incident, where a girl named Tenzin asks him to teach her to fight. The official film premises establish those different leads and settings.
First Guardian reaches back to a period before Akane joined the Bureau. Keep that prequel in the SS collection on a first watch. At this point you already understand the institution and recognise the people whose past the film explores. Release order lets that history add to their characterisation instead of asking it to introduce the entire setting.
Do not skip the collection simply because the main season number remains unchanged. It broadens the people and overseas strand that the later story draws on. In an English catalogue, Crunchyroll labels the third case “On the Other Side of Love and Hate”. The Case.3 number is the useful identifier when a listing uses a different translation of the Japanese subtitle.
Decide where you want Providence
Providence belongs to the main anime story. Its official introduction explicitly identifies it as the link between SS Case.3 and Psycho-Pass 3. It connects Akane and Kogami’s strand with the later story of Arata Shindo and Kei Mikhail Ignatov. Treating it as an unrelated film that can be watched before any season loses that context.
My recommendation for a first watch is to leave it until after First Inspector. You encounter season 3’s changed circumstances before receiving the later film’s account of what led there. That follows the sequence available to the original audience and lets the newer investigators establish their own story before you return to the intervening events.
If unexplained changes in the older cast would distract you from following a new investigation, put Providence immediately after SS Case.3 instead. You exchange some retrospective discovery for a clearer causal progression into season 3. Choose it if that continuity matters more to you than encountering the intervening events retrospectively.
For returning viewers, the choice is easier. If you have already finished season 3 and First Inspector, you can go straight to Providence. If you are rewatching the entire later storyline, the Case.3 → Providence → season 3 → First Inspector stretch lets you follow that bridge forward. Neither choice calls for a second viewing of First Inspector in another format.
First Inspector finishes season 3
Psycho-Pass 3 has eight extended episodes. Watch all eight, then continue directly into First Inspector; the official introduction describes that film as the conclusion of the two new Inspectors’ story. Stopping at episode 8 leaves that continuation unwatched.
First Inspector appears as a film and as a three-part presentation. The official Japanese disc specification lists a 135-minute feature. Prime Video’s listing divides it into Act One, Act Two and Act Three and places that collection under a “Season 4” selector. The selector is a catalogue label for this conclusion, not a reason to search for another ordinary television season between it and Providence.
Use the title and the three acts to identify the complete serial presentation. Watch either that or the feature in this slot. Film and episodic cuts can differ in footage and credits; either complete presentation fills this story slot.
Check the exact titles before subscribing or buying
A platform carrying “Psycho-Pass” may have only part of this route. Search separately for the 2015 film, all three SS cases, season 3, First Inspector and Providence. Check the language options on each title’s own page; an English dub on the first season does not establish the audio for every later film. Regional catalogues and licences change.
For discs, inspect the actual edition’s audio, subtitles and region compatibility. The Japanese First Inspector release cited above specifies Japanese audio and Japanese accessibility subtitles, so that product is not evidence of an English-friendly import. Our Crunchyroll and HIDIVE comparison explains the wider subscription choice; the exact Psycho-Pass titles should determine whether a service covers the stretch you want to watch.
The manga is not a prerequisite for this route. Psycho-Pass began as an original television anime, and publications such as the First Inspector manga explicitly adapt the animated story. Start with one complete first-season edition. If you are already beyond it, use the next unwatched entry above rather than restarting because a catalogue has renamed a film or grouped it under another season.
