That is the route we recommend below. It combines a clear starting point with the source novels’ sequence, while accounting for how the anime is packaged. There are other sensible approaches. The useful choice is whether you want the novels’ progression, the original anime release experience, or a later story that already interests you.
This guide describes starting premises and catalogue structure without revealing character deaths or arc resolutions. Film editions, missing episodes and the names used for individual stories matter more here than memorising every release date.
Which Monogatari order should you choose?
The novel-based route starts with Bake and brings Kizu in immediately afterwards. Its sequence follows Kodansha’s catalogue through Zoku. Choose it if you want one consistent plan covering the whole early series. You will need to split Second Season around Hana, but the diagram below identifies the exact stopping point.
The anime release route follows the order in which adaptations reached viewers. Its main difference for a newcomer is how long it postpones Kizu’s explanation of Araragi’s vampire encounter. It also places Hana after the original Second Season run, and Koyomi after the first Owari adaptation. Choose this approach if you specifically want the original audience’s sequence of discoveries. Our numbered list follows the novels instead, so do not switch between the two midway by accident.
A chronological route prioritises when events happen inside the story. Kizu takes place during spring break before Bake’s main setup, as its official story introduction explains. Starting there gives you the origin first. We would save a detailed chronological rearrangement for a rewatch: it asks you to organise material before you have met its characters and recognised its arcs.
In a 2024 interview, Aniplex producer Tatsuya Ishikawa says viewers can enjoy the anime from different entry points. Our recommendation is intended to reduce friction for someone who wants the full run, rather than make a hundred episodes a condition of trying the series.
The complete recommended watch order
Use this list as your queue. Names in italics identify the story arcs inside a larger season or collection. That distinction becomes especially useful at Second Season, where a service may show one umbrella title instead of six separate book titles.
- Bakemonogatari. Watch all 15 episodes.
- Kizumonogatari. Choose the original trilogy in the order Tekketsu, Nekketsu and Reiketsu, or the single-film Koyomi Vamp edition.
- Nisemonogatari.
- Nekomonogatari (Black). This is a separate title from Nekomonogatari (White).
- Second Season’s opening stories. Watch Tsubasa Tiger, followed by Mayoi Jiangshi.
- Hanamonogatari. Watch the Suruga Devil story here.
- The rest of Second Season. Return for Nadeko Medusa, Shinobu Time and Hitagi End, in that order.
- Tsukimonogatari. Begin the Final Season group.
- Koyomimonogatari. Include all 12 short episodes.
- Owarimonogatari’s first run. Watch the 2015 adaptation through Shinobu Mail.
- Owarimonogatari’s second run. Continue with the 2017 adaptation.
- Zoku Owarimonogatari. Watch its six episodes.
- Off & Monster Season. Follow the adaptation’s released episode sequence, starting with Tsukihi Undo.
Why Bakemonogatari makes a useful starting point
Bake introduces Araragi through the people he helps after his own vampire encounter. Aniplex’s synopsis describes five stories involving characters with apparition-related problems, including Hitagi Senjougahara, Suruga Kanbaru and Mayoi Hachikuji. It gives a newcomer a recurring cast and an idea of what a Monogatari story looks like before the prequel explains Araragi’s situation.
That is the practical reason for our Bake-first recommendation. Here, meeting the ongoing cast first gives Kizu a place in a series you have started to understand. If the vampire origin is what drew you to Monogatari, Kizu-first remains a legitimate alternative; it simply gives you that background earlier.
Check the episode list before moving on. The complete Bake release has 15 episodes, whereas the initial television broadcast contained 12. The final three were distributed online, a history Ishikawa discusses when explaining the franchise’s experiments with streaming. A catalogue showing only 12 episodes has not reached the end of Bake.
Kizumonogatari and Koyomi Vamp are alternative editions
Kizu tells the spring-break encounter with Kiss-shot Acerola-orion Heart-under-blade that changes Araragi’s life. Its official setup also brings in Meme Oshino and the vampire hunters. That makes it an origin story for relationships and circumstances already present in Bake, rather than another ordinary season to place after Nisemonogatari.
The original presentation consists of three films. Koyomi Vamp combines them into one re-edited film, as the rights holder’s announcement states. The US Blu-ray specification lists Koyomi Vamp at approximately 144 minutes. These are two ways to watch the same prequel slot, not four successive instalments.
For a first full-series viewing, our preference is the trilogy when both editions are available: you get the original three-part presentation. Choose Koyomi Vamp if you prefer a single feature-length sitting or that edition is the one you can obtain. The remaining watch order does not change with that choice.
Ishikawa says director Tatsuya Oishi spent about six years refining the consolidated version. That supports treating it as a separate presentation of the material. It does not establish that one edition is universally better. Watching both makes sense as an edition comparison later; it is unnecessary for following the main queue.
Find Hana using arc names
Hanamonogatari is the book positioned after Kabukimonogatari and before Otorimonogatari. The anime names those adjacent stories Mayoi Jiangshi and Nadeko Medusa. Hana itself is Suruga Devil. This is the insertion our novel-based route makes inside Second Season.

The catalogue can make that change look harder than it is. Aniplex’s collected Second Season edition includes all six stories and identifies the television omnibus recaps separately. Other listings can present Hana as its own title. Find the story name, watch it once at the indicated point, then resume Nadeko Medusa.
Two naming pairs are especially useful. Nekomonogatari (White) is Tsubasa Tiger, the start of Second Season; it is not the earlier Black title. Koimonogatari is Hitagi End, the last story in this group. If a service uses those book names instead of the umbrella season name, they are entries already covered by the queue, not extra stories to add afterwards.
This is also why we avoid assigning Hana a universal streaming episode number. A list that includes omnibus recaps will count differently from one that omits them. The stable instruction is the arc transition: finish Mayoi Jiangshi, watch Suruga Devil, then begin Nadeko Medusa.
Koyomi and Owari need separate entries
The end of the original sequence contains several short or unusually packaged releases. The official Japanese Final Season box lists four Tsukimonogatari episodes, 12 Koyomimonogatari episodes, 20 Owarimonogatari episodes and six Zoku episodes. It lists two Owari recap programmes separately from those 20 story episodes.
Koyomimonogatari belongs before Owari in the novel-based route. Keep it in the queue even though it looks smaller than the television seasons: it is a named adaptation in the publisher’s sequence and the complete Final Season collection. Its short format is a distribution choice, not a classification as bonus commentary.
For Owari, identify which run your listing contains. The first adaptation continues through Shinobu Mail; the second is the later continuation. A service may separate them into two seasons or combine them. Follow both, then Zoku. The word “Final” describes this group of adaptations, so it is not a reason to stop before the later Off & Monster material.
Follow Off and Monster’s own adaptation order
After Zoku, the production team made a deliberate change. In Ishikawa’s interview about the return, he explains that Off Season’s novels do not feature Araragi. Bringing the anime back after five years without its established main character was a concern, so the team interwove Off Season and Monster Season material.
It begins with Tsukihi Undo from Orokamonogatari, followed by Nadeko Draw from Nademonogatari. For this stage of our full-series route, follow the anime’s released sequence. Sorting the episodes into two separate book groups would replace the structure the adaptation team chose for the return.
Can you start here instead? Ishikawa explicitly hoped the new anime would bring viewers to the earlier adaptations and books, and says the team did not add a recurring “previously on” introduction. That offers a reasonable low-commitment way to try the franchise. Our Bake-first route gives you more preceding context; it is a recommendation for continuity, not a claim that the producer requires it.
As of 14 October 2026, Wazamonogatari — Karen Ogre is a forthcoming entry. The official 2 July announcement schedules it for winter 2026 without an exact premiere date.
