The publisher’s manga descriptions give a revealing answer. Weise’s fate grows out of an arrangement between its human lord and a demon who wants to understand human emotions. That arrangement initially helps both parties. The gold comes later, when coexistence has failed to protect the people living inside it.

Spoiler scope — The release information below is safe for anime-only viewers. From the next story section onward, this guide discusses premise details disclosed in VIZ’s descriptions of volumes 9 and 10. It does not reveal the arc’s resolution or claim to review the complete manga.

October 2027 is the announced Japanese broadcast window

The March 27, 2026 announcement confirms a third TV season, names the Golden Land arc and says broadcasting will begin in October 2027 on Japan’s Nippon TV network. It also identifies Macht as the last and strongest of the Seven Sages of Destruction.

That establishes a month, rather than a particular premiere day. The announcement does not give an episode count, an English-dub date or a country-by-country streaming schedule. Those details need their own confirmation; the Japanese broadcast window should not be presented as a worldwide release appointment. The official announcement and news index were checked for this guide on October 7, 2026.

Weise’s bargain ends in a city-wide catastrophe

VIZ’s volume 9 description introduces the situation through Frieren, Fern and Stark’s journey across the Northern Plateau. After the Great Tor Canyon, a plea for help draws them toward a cursed city and Macht. Seen only from that arrival, Golden Land could sound like another place where the party must defeat a powerful enemy.

The volume 10 description supplies the earlier relationship. Years before the war against the Demon King ended, Macht made a deal with the lord of the fortress city of Weise. His purpose was to learn about human emotions. At first, the arrangement benefited both sides. Later, he transformed the city and its residents into gold.

The order matters. A mutually useful arrangement is evidence that two parties can cooperate; it does not establish that they understand one another, or that the people depending on the agreement are safe. Our reading of these publisher premises is that Golden Land turns that gap into a city-wide catastrophe. The problem begins before Frieren arrives, in a relationship that appeared to work.

That also changes how to read the title. Gold normally promises wealth or a reward for reaching a difficult destination. Here, the material includes the residents themselves. A golden city has lost the human life that made it a city. Treating the setting as magnificent treasure misses what Frieren’s party has been asked to confront.

Denken makes the curse personal

VIZ does not introduce Denken as a name to add to a combat roster. Volume 9 specifically says his connection to Macht may prove useful. Volume 10 places the past of Denken and Weise alongside the demon’s history. The publisher therefore gives the crisis two scales: a whole city has been transformed, and a particular person carries a history connected to it.

For the viewer, that is a better preparation than simply memorizing Macht’s rank. Denken’s connection can matter because this is a confrontation with a past, not only an unfamiliar enemy. The descriptions leave room for how that connection will be used; they do not justify promising that he alone solves the curse.

There is a useful contrast with Frieren’s field-of-flowers spell. Those earlier scenes trace a small act through the people who remember it. Macht’s premise starts from a desire to understand human emotions, but the bargain ends in the destruction of the community around him. Both concern understanding people; their effects on those people are radically different.

Volume 9 is the useful entry to this manga premise

If the wait until October 2027 makes you want to read, start with the material that establishes the approach to the cursed city rather than jumping straight to its backstory. The official English book descriptions make the following choice possible:

  • For the approach and initial problem, choose Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, volume 9. Its description includes the Northern Plateau, the Great Tor Canyon, the plea for help and Denken’s connection to Macht.
  • For Weise’s earlier bargain and the intertwined past, continue to volume 10. Its description openly reveals the deal and the transformation into gold. Reading it first gives away premise information before the journey introduces the problem.
  • To keep the anime’s introduction a surprise, stop with the confirmed release window. Even publisher blurbs disclose more than the season announcement does.

This is a volume route to the Golden Land premise, not an officially confirmed chapter-by-chapter map of season 3. The anime announcement names the arc without specifying its opening and closing manga chapters. Buying a volume and predicting the adaptation’s exact boundaries are different decisions.
