When season 3 airs in Japan
The official broadcast page lists the Friday television slot at 11 p.m. Japan Standard Time on Nippon TV’s network. Japanese streaming distribution follows from midnight on Saturday, beginning October 3. Those are two listings for the same weekly release cycle: the change of calendar day does not mean streaming is a week behind television.
Outside Japan, check Crunchyroll’s listing for your region and language. The Japanese broadcast clock alone does not establish when a licensed subtitle track or dub will be available.
A cour is a broadcast block. Season 3’s second block is announced for April 2027, with a gap between the two. The official page gives no exact April day or complete episode calendar, so a finale date calculated from an assumed episode count remains unconfirmed.

Why episode lists start at 49
The official season 3 episode index continues the anime’s overall numbering. Its first three entries are #49, #50 and #51, corresponding to season 3 episodes 1, 2 and 3. A platform showing episode 49 and a discussion referring to season 3 episode 1 can therefore mean the same instalment.
As of this check, the index contains those three entries. Under the announced Friday pattern, October 23 is the next expected Japanese television slot. That calendar calculation does not supply an episode 4 title or synopsis: neither should be inferred from a novel chapter or an unofficial countdown. For the next instalment’s actual story description, use the official index when it adds the entry.
Maomao returns to the pleasure district
After the Shi clan rebellion, Maomao has lost her food-taster position and returned to the pleasure district. Jinshi’s situation has changed in the opposite direction. His position as the emperor’s younger brother brings political responsibilities he can no longer keep at a distance. The season introduction places Loulan’s warning about a disaster threatening the country alongside Maomao’s renewed work outside the rear palace.
That change of setting matters to the kind of evidence Maomao encounters. At court, an unusual meal or garment could pass through a tightly controlled household. In the opening cases here, food arrives through breakfast, trade or charity, and clothing carries a seller’s story. She has to establish where an object came from and why someone would possess it before treating its supposed meaning as an explanation.
The opening cases make ordinary objects suspicious
Episode 49, “Inago,” brings the breakfast clue into focus. The Verdigris House’s meal includes cooked locusts, and a remark from Zhaoyu attracts Maomao’s attention. Watching what he notices is the way into the investigation; the insect’s appearance alone cannot explain why this breakfast matters.
Locusts also give the domestic and political openings a shared vocabulary. The breakfast sits alongside Loulan’s warning in the season’s introduction. Reading them together makes the movement between Maomao’s household observations and Jinshi’s national responsibilities more interesting, while leaving the connection for the story to establish.
Episode 50, “The Fire-Rat’s Robe,” moves to a used-clothing market. Maomao is buying padded clothes for Zhaoyu when he notices a white garment with unusual embroidery. Its seller gives it an extraordinary name and relates a story about a celestial woman who disappeared into a lake.
This setup changes the question from what a strange object looks like to how it acquired its reputation. The embroidery, the place where the garment is sold and the story attached to it offer different kinds of information. Treating the legend as the answer would discard the practical details Maomao is positioned to examine.
Episode 51 adds a more urgent household case. A poorly dressed man asks Maomao to help his sick daughter. Accompanied by a Verdigris House employee, she visits a run-down home near the pleasure district and finds two weakened sisters. A rich baked sweet, received while begging and shared between them, strikes her as an unlikely gift.
The mismatch between the family’s circumstances and the expensive food gives her a reason to question its source. It also makes this third case different from the market legend: the immediate task is to help vulnerable children, and the route by which a gift reached them may matter to that task. The opening moves from a household observation to a traded object and then to a family’s need, giving Maomao reasons to investigate beyond palace assignments.
The film has its own release and story
The Apothecary Diaries — The Late Lady’s Treasure opens in Japan on December 11, 2026. The official film site presents an original story conceived by Natsu Hyuuga, set around a southern water city, a deceased consort and a treasure. It is a separate theatrical project, not an announced compilation of the first cour or a television episode filling the break.
In its October 8 distribution announcement, Crunchyroll says it has acquired North American and worldwide rights excluding Asia, with India included. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will distribute the film; North American and other international dates and ticket details will follow. The Japanese December date is therefore confirmed, while an opening in your own market still needs a separate announcement. No worldwide streaming date is established by that theatrical-rights deal.
Which English novel to choose after season 2
If you want to move from the completed second season into the books, light novel volume 5 is the relevant next volume to examine. J-Novel Club’s official volume 5 description places the story after the Shi clan’s fall, with Jinshi facing a changed position, a threat of insects and a journey toward Gyokuyou’s western homeland. Those circumstances connect it to the third season’s announced starting situation.
That is a reading recommendation based on the matching premises, rather than a promise that a particular television episode adapts a particular chapter. Start the volume from its beginning if you want the prose version of this transition; an episode synopsis is not a reliable chapter bookmark. Neither the first cour’s last chapter nor the second cour’s final novel volume can be established from the release schedule.
Check the edition before buying. The prose series credits Natsu Hyuuga as author and Touko Shino as illustrator; J-Novel Club offers the English digital novels and identifies Square Enix as the print publisher. A manga volume with the same number is a different book and cannot be substituted as the same continuation point. Choose the prose volume if this is the route you intend to take, and use its official description or preview to confirm where you are entering the story.
For anime-only viewing, continue with season 3 in episode order and follow the film’s announcements separately. Use the episode index for the next instalment’s setup and the film distributor for overseas cinema dates.
